N — Navigate · Chapter 22
YOUR EMPATHY SCORE
Welcome, Commander.
Empathy is the moral intelligence of your Navigate stage — the ability to understand and share another person's feelings without losing your own integrity. Without it, every conversation becomes a competition. With it, you become the most effective person in the room.
Purpose
To assess your current ability to employ cognitive empathy (understanding perspective) and affective empathy (connecting emotionally) across five dimensions.
Instructions
For each statement, mark how true it is for you: 1 = Never, 5 = Always.
PART I: LISTEN
I listen without planning my response while the other person is talking.
I notice the tone of voice and body language, not just words.
PART II: VALIDATION
I acknowledge the other person's feelings, even if I disagree with them.
I make people feel heard by reflecting back what they say.
PART III: PERSPECTIVE-TAKING
I try to imagine how a situation appears from the other person's perspective.
"I ask myself, 'What might this person be afraid of, or hoping for?'"
PART IV: NON-JUDGEMENT
I avoid criticizing or dismissing people while they're sharing.
I separate the person from their opinions or choices.
PART V: EXPRESSION OF EMPATHY
I let people know I understand what they're going through.
I communicate care and compassion, even in disagreement.
